The second amendment right is integral to the foundation of our country, but it is important that this right does not infringe on the protection of our communities and families. No amendment goes unregulated or unrestricted and the second amendment is not an exception. Currently, the United States only makes up 4% of the world’s population, but accounts for 31% of the global mass shootings—more than any other country. Aside from mass shootings, we have more gun-related deaths than any other highly-developed country. Largely attributed to access, we must remember that individuals on the FBI’s most wanted list, terrorists on the no-fly list, and felons who have been convicted of domestic violence can all purchase firearms. It’s clear that this issue stems from access and the solution is ensuring that these weapons don’t fall into the hands of dangerous people. By closing the loophole in gun sales—coupled with universal background checks, we can better protect our communities, our schools, and our children.
